What is HIV and AIDS?

HIV and AIDS are two different blood diseases that are closely linked to each other. Acquired immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic, life-threatening disease caused by HIV, while the Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV can be treated and kept at bay. If a person is diagnosed early and put on the correct treatment, they have a good chance of living a healthy normal life and their HIV may never develop into AIDS. HIV & AIDS is spread through contact with bodily fluids that contain the Viruses. it can be passed from person to person during sex, caring for open wounds, sharing of needles, or during childbirth.

HIV/AIDS AND THE CHURCH

The church at large should work to encourage open disclosure of status, as well as the acceptance and support of people with HIV/AIDS. 

With regard to situations of marriage, where one of the spouses is HIV-positive, the church encourages the use of a condom. 

The AFM of SA recognises the government’s duty to enhance public health and also to provide for safer sex. 

The AFM of SA, still, encourages parents to educate their children in the principles of sexual morality and also to discuss sexual health openly. 

The AFM of SA affirms its belief in the healing power of God. However, anyone who was once HIV-positive and now believe themselves healed, must seek medical confirmation.

CONFIDENTIALITY

The church will encourage a supportive environment in which members can discuss HIV/AIDS openly, including their own experience living with HIV/AIDS. Where members disclose that they or their spouse and/or dependents are living with HIV/AIDS, the confidence will be respected. Disclosure under all circumstances will be treated as shared confidentiality between the parties, unless expressly stated to the contrary. If there is any doubt, the person living with HIV/AIDS should be consulted before further disclosure takes place.

HIV-related information concerning prospective members or current members or any of the above-mentioned people's spouses and/or dependents will be kept strictly confidential.
